Know thyself: Awareness and Discernment

Life is energy. We are energy. Beyond our physical bodies, we are enveloped in our subtle bodies, which extend far beyond our physical bodies. Energies from other individuals around us are very perceptible, and even more so when you become more sensitive to subtle energies.

You may have experienced this when a person quietly enters a room and suddenly the air feels different, or when you think of someone and then they enter the room, or your phone rings, and it’s them! That is your energy field picking up on the energy field of someone else. We aren’t always aware of it, but we are intermingled in each other’s energies all of the time. If we resonate with the energy of another, we may become more aware of their current emotional state. Remember, to resonate with something means you are in sync with that particular energy. In chemistry, like attracts like. When you are in resonance with an energy, regardless of which energy or emotion, your system will attract that same energy, or become more aware of it.

When we start to become aware of our multidimensional selves, we become much more sensitive to the energies of those around us. Once you learn to discern whether your emotions or physical symptoms are your own or that of others, you can free yourself from unwanted energies and continue to be in the higher vibration of feel good energies!

I had a fascinating experience with this phenomenon few years ago, while at work. I was on break in the lunch room with two co-workers. On that particular day, I was sitting in between the two of them at a small round table. One on my left, the other on my right. I was not feeling particularly stressed that day, yet I began to notice my stomach felt like it was in knots. I hadn’t been feeling any physical stress symptoms prior to going to lunch. I then began to realize; it was the energy of the two individuals sitting on either side of me. One individual was a bit of a bully. The other individual was more of a follower. So, the follower would tend to sway in the direction of the bully if the bully was exhibiting bad behavior (albeit subconsciously, likely in order to avoid becoming the target of bullying herself). I had been the recipient of bully behavior from this individual several times, so I was very aware of the dynamic going on.

There was no verbal communication, as each of us was minding our own business. Once I became aware of these uncomfortable energies, I called on Divine Blue Light to surround each of us in an individual blue light bubble. Within a few moments, the energy shifted, my stomach relaxed and the tension in the room seemed to dissipate. The individual on my left, the bully, shrunk into herself, began biting her nails and attempted to make herself as small as possible. It was a marked change in demeanor. The other individual became less tense, her energy expanded, and she began to chat a little. The impact of that experience has never left me. I was blown away by the power of that simple little act of surrounding the situation in blue light.

You may be wondering, ‘if you felt those energies emanating from someone else, wouldn’t that mean you were feeling those stressor energies within yourself as well?’

I would answer that I have lived many years in resonance with those feelings of negativity, low self-esteem, and fear. So, yes, I was able to feel those energies instantly because they were strongly embedded in my cellular memories, even though I was not directly experiencing them myself at that time. I knew I wasn’t feeling stressed or insecure or fearful, but my system was very familiar with those feelings, so I was picking up on the energies from those sitting around me.

At that time in my development, many years ago, I was aware of using color frequencies from various sources. I have since studied Vibrational Science, and Pranic Healing, both of which involve using the healing properties of color vibration and life force energy for healing.

Knowing I could use my intention to call on specific colors of light for an intended effect, I used the blue light for protection. In this case, shielding and protecting myself from unwanted energies.

This situation brings up the issue of ethics. Is it appropriate to surround others with blue light without their knowledge or permission? In this case, at that time, I was not aware of the importance of considering whether they would have accepted it or not. It was a means of protection to contain their negative energies within their own space, versus sending them direct healing energies. I understand now that it would have been sufficient for me to surround myself in the blue light, in addition to having the recognition that the energies were not my own was enough to release the toxic energies from my awareness.

Some people have different philosophies one this. Some people feel you must never intervene unknowingly with a person’s energy field. Others believe it’s okay to send healing whether it is received knowingly or not. In the Reiki healing modality, as well as Pranic healing for example, it’s okay to send energy to a person, situation or event without the express permission of the receiver. It’s kind of like, if you have the awareness and the ability to be of service to others, it is okay to provide healing energies for others. They don’t need to be aware of it, and it will do no harm.

For example, if you are attuned to Reiki healing energies and you drive by an accident scene, it is perfectly acceptable to send Reiki in support of the immediate healing needs and support of those involved. If it is meant to be received, it will be received. If not, then the energies go into the earth or environment. In general, if your intention is to help or protect, with the understanding and intention of not interfering in a person’s freedom of choice or their lessons in life, then it is similar to sending prayers to intervene on another’s behalf. The energies will go where they are most needed for the specific situation in question. Each individual must follow their own inner guidance on this. Your Higher Self knows what to do.

As mentioned in the International House of Reiki Blog: Distance Healing-Permission or No Permission
“Does the sun ask permission to shine? Does a fire ask permission to radiate heat?” People will “take from this heat accordingly.” (5/11/2010)

It is so important to be familiar with your own energy state at all times. Acknowledge and respond accordingly with love and non-judgement. This will help you recognize when you are feeling your own emotions and feelings, versus the energies of others.

Awareness is probably the most important tool available to you as a means of protecting and shielding your energy field. Once you recognize where the energies are coming from, you can intend to release energies that are not your own and acknowledge and support the healing of your own emotions and feelings. As an added protection, you can call on Blue Light to surround your energy field and protect you from any unwanted energies from others. Calling on your Guardian Angel or Archangel Michael is also very helpful in managing these situations. The most important part is your awareness of unwanted energies, and the intention to be free of them.

Feel like you aren’t getting anywhere on your path of awakening? Putting in lots of meditation time and still find yourself reacting to the day’s stresses and those in your environment in less than enlightened ways? Hitting inner road blocks like never before? It’s okay. It happens. We are awakening to a new way of being. Our old habits and patterns aren’t so easy to shake. It takes time, effort, discipline, and patience. Patience with others, and most importantly with ourselves. Our old ways of thinking and behaving won’t leave us overnight, just because we have awakened to our spiritual selves and are aware that we are much more than we ever thought we were. We are still human beings with thoughts, feelings, inner wounds and habitual behaviors. Now that we are aware, we are responsible for taking care of ourselves on a much deeper level. Which means we must face our inner selves with courage and determination to heal and reach our full potential, and allow ourselves the time and space to do so. I remember when I first started attending classes and group meditations. I just knew, every meditation, every next new class, I was going to be opened up and my spiritual gifts would suddenly appear and I would finally arrive! Of course, I began to catch on with each new meditation, or new class, that I still had some inner work to do before my gifts would decide to show up. I finally began to realize, it’s a process, not an event! It’s the journey that counts, not the destination. I still had loads of inner work to do. In addition to the wounds I had yet to heal from years of emotional trauma, as I was slowly beginning my healing journey, I suddenly found myself dealing with the grief of the loss of my mother and my marriage. Two major life changes in almost as many years. Yes, I had work to do. Of course, healing and awakening weren’t going to happen immediately, though in the beginning I naively thought they would. Or, maybe I just wished they would, so the hurt would stop. Walking the awakening path opens doors to awareness in unexpected ways. We begin to see ourselves, perhaps for the first time. Self-awareness is the path to true healing and awakening. We are no good to others if we don’t first take care of ourselves. If we aren’t working on our inner work, our spiritual development will not progress as rapidly as we would like. To be clear enough to connect to higher worlds, we must do the inner work to shed all of the heaviness from our being. I know all too well that facing our inner demons is a very scary prospect. Who knows what we will find lurking in the recesses of our inner being? Yet, we can’t let that stop us from doing our work. Living in that fear is self-defeating and stops us in our tracks. It keeps us in our lower patterns and from exploring our inner connections to the worlds of Spirit and Higher Consciousness. The journey requires us to have the courage to face our inner wounds, so we can heal and move forward with clarity and inner peace.
